The Czech Cartoonists' Union (CUK) was established in
March 1990. As far as international events are concerned, three great
competitions are of especially great importance: Joke for FOR in
Prague, Biennale Cartoons in Pisek, Humorest in Hradec Kralove
and last year's innovation - Napoleon in Austerlitz (Slavkov in the
Brno region). CUK organises Cartoon Salons every year in Prague,
which culminate always in November by the exhibition of ten
"jubilee" cartoonists from the number of CUK. It is just this
exhibition that forms a dignified framework for the most important
event of celebrations, the General Assembly of CUK members, at
which the annual prizes of the Czech Cartoonists' Union are granted
to personalities who have contributed to the development of graphic
humour and ÄŒUK in a significant manner. The first "Order of The
White Monkey" (the name being inspired by the symbol from the
emblem) was awarded in 2004 to Jiri Winter - Neprakta on the
occasion of his 80th birthday. Three of these prizes were granted
in 2005: to the cartoonist of the excellent world class Miroslav
Bartak, to the Town of Pisek (organiser of Biennale Cartoons) and
to Josef Kobra-Kucera, organiser of more than 300 Cartoon Salons
in Prague.
In 2005, the Czech Cartoonists' Union published the
publication entitled "Encyclopaedia of Cartoonists" with profiles
of 85 important Czech authors. Every year it organises also
Gastronomic Cartoons in Znojmo. Since the time of its foundation,
CUK has fostered intensive contacts with Slovak authors, in 2005
the close cooperation with Polish authors was developed as well.
Being a member of the Federation of Cartoonists Organisations,
CUK presents itself also in FECO bulletins and at international
cartoon servers (Poland, Cyprus, Italy). The number of awards of
the ÄŒUK members at the international scene is increasing as well:
among others Sliva, Bartak, Kovarik, Plotena, Steska, Hejzlar,
Kostyr...
A connection bridge between the CUK members is the email
bulletin "e-GAG", which developed (in 2005) into an ordinary
picture weekly consisting of 16 pages. Its contents are formed,
apart from professional and educational materials and discussions
about cartoons and profiles of important personalities of the genre,
especially by practical articles: propositions of competitions,
competition results, calendars of events of both the Union and
of an international type, invitations to exhibitions and notices of
published materials and cartoonists' magazines.
